Fly Board at Havelock Island

Powerful water jets strapped to your feet lift you clear of the surface — hover, dive like a dolphin, or soar up to 15 metres above the water. One of the most cutting-edge water sports now available in Havelock.

About the experience

Fly boarding straps a board to your feet, connected by a hose to a jet ski behind you. The jet ski's engine forces water down through the board at high pressure, and that thrust is what lifts you into the air — hovering above the surface, diving forward like a dolphin, or rising several metres straight up, all controlled by how you angle your feet and body.

It looks like it takes serious skill, but the learning curve is quicker than most people expect. A trained instructor controls the jet ski's throttle for you and talks you through balance and control from the water, so first-timers are usually up and hovering within their first few attempts.

How it works
1

Briefing and fitting

Your instructor fits the board and explains the basics of balance and hand signals before you're in the water.

2

Getting your balance

The first few minutes are about finding stability just above the surface — most guests fall a few times before it clicks, which is completely normal.

3

Hovering and flying

Once you've got the balance, your instructor lets you climb higher and try controlled dives and turns.

What's included
  • Fly board and jet ski with a trained instructor
  • Full safety briefing and life jacket
  • No prior experience required
Good to know

Fitness & swimming: a reasonable level of fitness helps, and while a life jacket is worn throughout, basic comfort in water is recommended.

Best time: calm sea conditions give the best control — your operator will confirm suitability on the day based on weather and swell.

Please note: this is a physically active water sport — not recommended for anyone with back, neck, or heart conditions, or during pregnancy. Weather-dependent, so sessions may be rescheduled in poor sea conditions.
Frequently asked questions
A life jacket is worn throughout, so strong swimming isn't essential — but basic water comfort helps, since you will fall a few times while finding your balance.
It looks harder than it is. Most first-timers are hovering within their first few tries with instructor guidance — full aerial tricks take longer, but the basic sensation of flight comes quickly.
This is a physically demanding activity best suited to teens and adults in reasonable fitness — let us know the ages in your group when you enquire and we'll confirm suitability.
