Architecture of Isolation
- The Panopticon Design: Completed in 1906, the jail featured a unique radial layout with seven wings fanning out from a central watchtower like the spokes of a wheel. This design allowed a single guard to monitor every corridor while ensuring total solitary confinement for the 693 cells.
- Sacred Grounds: Notable freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla were incarcerated here. Savarkar's cell remains a key site of reverence for visitors today.
- Surviving Legacy: While four wings were damaged during World War II and the 1941 earthquake, the remaining three wings now house a museum, an art gallery, and a photo library documenting the liberation movement.
Unmissable Experiences
- Light & Sound Show: Every evening, the jail transforms into a moving stage for a "Son-et-Lumiere" performance. Narrated from the perspective of an ancient Peepal tree, it poignantly recounts the history of the freedom struggle in both Hindi and English.
- Museum & Exhibits: The ground floor museum features rare photographs and exhibits detailing the harsh life of inmates, including the "oil mill" and flogging frames used for punishment.
- The Eternal Flame: Visit the Martyrs' Column and the 'Swatantrya Jyot' (Eternal Flame of Freedom), erected to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
